Hilary Duff talks to Disney Adventure Magazine in India for their August 2007 edition.

Q Do you prefer acting to singing or doing both simoultaneously?
A I love both, but if I were to pick one, I’d say singing.
Q Who are your favorite singers? Do you idolize anyone?
A I love Nelly Furtardo! I think she’s really cool. I love how she started out and where she’s reached now. Everything about her just works.
Q If you could be or play the voice of a Disney character, who would it be?
A I loved Minnie Mouse when I was little.
Q Do you have a message for the readers of Disney Adventures?
A Hey guys! Thanks so much for your love and support for Lizzie! Remember, always follow your dreams. Love you!
Q Your mom is super cool! What is your relationship with her?
A My mom, my sister and I have always had an incredible relationship. She’s (mom is) smart and tough. And there’s still so much for me to learn from her. But I need her in a different way now than I did when I was 16.
Q What was it like playing Lizzie McGuire’s character?
A It was a great experience - quite like a normal teen’s life.
Q What intrigues you the most about India?
A I haven’t been to India as yet but I’ve heard its beautiful! I would love to visit.

Hilary Duff speaks about herself

"I'm just one little person with so much money.
I've got so much it's scary. It's amazing to think that I can take care of myself financially, as well as everyone around me. That's a really nice feeling.

The car I want is a Porsche Cayenne Turbo. But my business manager doesn't want me to buy it – he says that I'm a terrible driver and don't need that kind of car.

I love cars, but I'm trying to scale down, because you don't need more than one.

It's excessive. At the moment I have a white Range Rover, and I used to have a Mercedes SL500. I care about the environment, but I wouldn't buy a hybrid car.

The other day I had a little accident because I was driving while I was on the phone. It was just a tap, nothing serious, so I thought, I'll keep going, it's fine, whatever.
But my business manager told me, 'You have to be careful, because people will sue you.'

So I need to be cautious without stressing myself out.
It's hard to imagine going more than 72 hours without shopping. Because I work all the time, when I get the chance to shop I go crazy. If you don't get excited when you get new things, then what's it all worth?
I have 50 bags and ten watches.

I was just in Chicago and bought a Louis Vuitton bag for $1,400 and bought my sister one, too. I did a little dance.
I've got a rose-gold Jacob watch and a Rolex that I got in Germany, black with a rose-gold starburst face.
I think it cost $11,000. Both my houses are in LA.
The one I live in is a big Spanish six-bedroom house with an Olympic-size swimming pool. My mum lives in the other one.

Also, my sister and I own land in Texas – it just sits and makes money, I think. I don't know too much about it.
The most extravagant thing I've done is rent a huge jet to fly my family back to LA from Texas.

Haylie and my mother and I got on to this beautiful plane, and we couldn't believe we had created this lifestyle, with our dogs running around the plane and champagne and great food and chocolates.

My mum said, 'Look at our lives', and we cried. It's sad what girls like Paris, Britney and Lindsay go through.
I feel for them. I am so lucky that I am somewhat sane.
That's not a judgment. It's easy for me to say, 'Look, she shaved her head, she can't get her life together, she's a mess.'

But when you have 75 paparazzi outside your house every day, it's horrible. It was right that Paris Hilton went to jail.
It was horrible that she had to go through that, but so many of the people I grew up with in Texas have gone to jail for drinking and driving, so why shouldn't she?
I don't want to go down the same road as Lindsay Lohan.
I can't say why she ended up in rehab and why that scene interests her.

I focus on my work. I don't mix with people who take drugs and don't go out clubbing and partying all the time.

Lindsay and I fell out when we were 13. We didn't like each other because we were dating the same guy – pop star Aaron Carter.

How was I supposed to know he was dating her, too?
But she was angry because she thought I had stolen her boyfriend. Now we are fine. We see each other, but we are into different things.

My dad is a stranger to me. When my parents split up last year, it hit me like a brick in the face. Usually, parents get divorced when you are young, but mine were together while I was growing up, so I thought it would never happen.

For some reason, I was embarrassed that my family wasn't perfect and that some woman had broken it up. I don't talk to my dad at all. I love him and hopefully some day we will have a relationship, but we probably won't for a long time.
What does anyone go through when they find out their dad has a totally different life with a different woman and has never really cared about you?

That's pretty hard to deal with. So last year was tough for my mum, my sister and me. We were always really close, but now I think we are closer, and we are at peace with everything. But for a while it devastated every part of my world. He hasn't tried to have a relationship with Haylie and I since it happened. I wrote about my parents' divorce.

When we found out that my dad was being unfaithful, I imagined what it would be like for me to be in my mum's situation.

My new single Stranger and the song Gypsy Woman are about my parents' divorce, not about my break-up.
Guitar music is my favourite. For years now I've listened to Tragic Kingdom by No Doubt, Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette and anything by Morrissey, especially Suedehead.

I'm obsessed with The Cure and I've downloaded all their songs on iTunes.

Joel [Madden] was my first love, but I feel happier now we've split. I didn't leave Joel to be with someone else.
I felt like I needed to be myself for a while. But I felt disrespected when he went off with Nicole Richie, because he moved on to another girl so quickly.

I've been on lots of dates, but I haven't met anyone I like – isn't that crazy? I work so hard and there's no time.

The last thing I want to do is jump into a relationship that's as serious as my last one was at my age. But I still want the cookie-cutter American dream: to get married and have kids and a house with a white picket fence.

The rumours that I'm dating Frankie Delgado [a club promoter] aren't true; we're good friends.

I wouldn't make the first move with a guy. I get really shy.
I asked my friend to help me and teach me how it's done, so she saw a guy walking down Sunset Boulevard who was cute and shouted, 'Hey, I want to talk to you.'

They ended up getting married, but I could never, ever do that. My taste in men is really weird.

Everyone thinks I like older rocker guys with tattoos, like Joel, but it's not true.

I like older men. I think actor Ryan Reynolds is really cute, and so is Christian Bale, but he's married. I have the biggest crush on John Cusack. We became close friends making War, Inc. We were stuck in Bulgaria forever and played board games all night. And we like a lot of the same music. We would be constantly burning CDs for each other, going, 'You've got to listen to this!' He suggested a lot of old artists like John Lennon, Bob Dylan and Crosby, Stills & Nash.

For my new film I play an overtly sexual East European pop star. She is bitchy and horrible to everyone around her. It's a really twisted satire. My character is attracted to anything and everything and throws herself at John Cusack, but he's not into it.

Some wouldn't, but I enjoy the business side of my work.
It's so funny that people think I'm a mogul or a brand, but it's true, I know a lot about running a business. I like to know exactly where my money is going. I love luxury.
I go to Cabo San Lucas in Mexico for weekends a lot and to a beautiful spa in Santa Barbara called Bacara.
But sometimes my friends and I slum it and hang out at the beach in Malibu and rent a motel.

All the same, I want a normal life. I want to be able to ride my bike in my neighbourhood and walk to my favourite coffee shop and not have craziness round me all the time.
I like a glass of wine and I'll have champagne, but I don't get drunk. I go home and cut roses; that's exciting enough for me.

I guess my career itself - most of all my first two tours. I had never been on tour before and I didn't know people cared about my music.

That people think I am perfect, and not a normal person. Young people my age that have the same sort of careers seem to be always acting crazy. Because I am not pictured doing these things, I am criticised for being too perfect. But if I was I would be criticised too.

I'm not a politician but ...

There are so many issues in America. Our involvement in the war is the most obvious, and also the way some people are treated. I would also change the weekends to workdays, and have the whole week as a weekend, then I'd be a popular politician, wouldn't I?

Baking, my special is cookies. I'm also good athlete, and a good friend.

Driving. My garage sometimes jumps out at me. The other day I heard a scratch as I was pulling my car out. I thought I just ran over some bubble wrap so I kept going. When I got out, I saw my mirror was hanging off. Everyone is scared to get in the car with me.

It depends on my mood. Last night my sister and I just stayed in and had a meal, had a swim and watched a film, and it was so nice to just chill out. Other times I want to dance and stay out late.

I don't know, but I think 23-24 will be cool.

Hilary Duff tries to Maintain her Dignity-Westword

Westword (Michael Roberts): There’s been a lot of talk about the title and the cover of your new CD, Dignity. Some people have interpreted it as a comment about other pop stars and celebrities who came into the spotlight around the same time you did. Has that been misinterpreted? Or was that what you were going for?

Hilary Duff: You know what? When I wrote the song, it wasn’t like… It’s funny. I’d never really sat down and written a whole record before, like I did with this one. And I took a lot of time off, where I wasn’t working on a million other things while I was making the record, like I had done in the past. I was spending a lot of time in Los Angeles and just kind of enjoying my time off and seeing what came up and what experiences I had – for writing, you know. And I think living in L.A. in general is really what that song is about. Yeah, maybe it’s a little bit about celebrities and young people who run in the same genre of work that I’m in. It is kind of a judgmental song. I’m really not that much of a judgmental person. I’m not, like, bashing anyone in particular. But definitely it’s a song questioning people’s dignity and what they think is okay and what’s not okay, and the way Los Angeles is very superficial. That’s what that song is about. And it’s not necessarily just celebrities. It’s people that live there that think money can get you anything you want, and you think you have the authority because you have money, and you’re treating people disrespectfully. It’s about all of that, so I’d say it’s not necessarily completely aimed at just celebrities.

WW: Still, the image on the CD’s jacket: There’s a difference between the way you present yourself there and the way we see fill-in-the-blank celebrity on TMZ.com and Entertainment Tonight. Was that a message you were sending? Be dignified. Don’t be the way a lot of people are being presented these days?

HD: On the cover of my record?

WW: Yeah.

HD: You mean the picture?

WW: The picture, yes.

HD: I don’t know. I think it’s a very classy looking picture. I just liked that it was my face, and it’s just me. It’s pretty much like… I don’t know. The record was so personal for me. The record cover is a big closeup of my face. So it’s not like I have no clothes on or I’m trying to do something really edgy or provocative. It’s just me.

WW: So for you, it wasn’t so much that you were trying to say with that photo, “Everyone should be dignified as this,” or “I’m going to be dignified even if other celebrities aren’t going to be.” It was more, “This is the real me.”

HD: Yeah. It’s not about anybody else. It’s my record and I would not ever want to try and make someone like me or say this is how you should be. I’m just saying this is how I am and this is how I want to be.

WW: It’s a very serious image, and there are some series themes on the CD. But there are also a lot of lighthearted moments. Is that something you want people to know – that it’s not only a somber record, but an entertaining one as well?

HD: It’s funny. When I have done some interviews in the past where people were like, “Explain this song, and explain this song.” Well, all the songs are pretty serious. All the subject matter is pretty personal. I had a pretty tough year last year, so, of course, when you’re writing a record, the only things to write about are the things you feel the most, you know? But even though it is serious, and the subject matter, some of it is pretty deep, the music isn’t. The music is fun. It’s like a total dance record. No matter what, you feel like moving and dancing when you hear it. But when you listen to the words, it means something.

WW: You mentioned the tough year. There was the guy who ended up being sentenced to jail time for stalking you, and your relationship with Joel Madden ended – and your parents broke up, too. I understand that a couple of songs people thought were about you and Joel – “Stranger” and “Gypsy Woman” – that people thought were about you and Joel were actually about your parents. Is that right?

HD: Yeah, that’s correct.

WW: Was it difficult to write those songs because you were so close to them? Or was it necessary, because you needed an outlet?

HD: You know what? Right when I started to write my record was right about when I found out about my parents. And I was really nervous at first to be honest about what I was going through. Since I’ve been in this business for such a long time, you really learn to keep your guard up and not tell anyone about you, because people make stuff up, and they’re so intrusive. It’s just kind of a natural defense that people put up – to not say anything, because you know everyone’s going to be talking about it. So when I was writing, “Stranger” was actually the first song I wrote for the record, and I didn’t want anyone to know what my family was going through. I don’t know if I felt it was embarrassing, or if I felt it was nobody’s business, but it was what I was dealing with, and it was the thing that was affecting me most in my life at the time. So I wrote this song imagining what it was like if I was in my mom’s shoes. And “Gypsy Woman” is completely about my dad, and this woman, and their relationship. I didn’t really hold much back there. But that was later on the record, when I finally came to terms with being really honest and not caring what people thought and realizing that, if anything, it’s just going to make people relate to the record more. Because this is something normal that happens to normal people, and I’m a normal person, and my life isn’t perfect. But I thought it was interesting that I had my guard up so much that “Stranger” looks like it’s about me and my relationship and really it’s about my parents.

WW: After the record came out, did the reaction that came out make you realize you’d made the right choices about being that open? Or did it bother you that you were being misinterpreted?

HD: I think that you get used to being misinterpreted. People are always going to make what they want out of what you say, and it’s going to get twisted. So I don’t care to much about that. But I did feel like I made the right decision. It feels really good to write my record and sing each song onstage and remember the specific reason why you wrote that song – what experience you had, what made you feel that way to write that. It’s so personal and it feels so good, and actually, for this record, I got the best reviews for any record I ever put out before. And that’s really exciting. Being so open and honest, you set yourself up for disappointment if people hate it or whatever. But I was really pleased. And, of course, people said “Gypsy Woman” and “Stranger” were about Joel and Nicole Richie’s relationship, and that was the only thing that kind of bothered me, because how do you defend yourself? People just think that you’re lying if you don’t tell them what they want to hear. But they were such personal songs for me, and to have them make them about something they weren’t was kind of upsetting.

WW: There’s been some controversy with one of Avril Lavigne’s co-songwriters saying, “She says she actually wrote this song, but she really didn’t do very much.” In your case, you say, “I wrote this record.” How did you collaborate with your co-writers. Did you have finished songs that you brought to them and you worked together? Or was it different on each song?

HD: Well, if you look at my record, I wrote almost every song with a lady named Kara DioGuardi. I’ve worked with Kara since the beginning. When I started singing, on my very first record, she’d write songs for me and stuff. And this time, I was like, “I want to do it. I want to learn this process, and I want to come up with all the ideas.” And Kara was the only person that I really felt comfortable with – that I knew would give me all the control and all the freedom I wanted, but also the confidence at the same time. Kara’s like great with melodies, and that wasn’t really my strongest point when I started. But I’m very outspoken. When it comes to what I want the song to be about, what I want the track to sound like, what message I want to get across, what I want the words to be. I was really good at that. And I like to stand my ground and have my way a little bit. It’s my record. I should be able to do that. But she did help me. She especially helped me with the melodies.

WW: So the lyrics are pretty much straight from you, and you worked together to make sure the settings were right?

HD: Yeah, yeah. And sometimes I would be like, “This is the point I want to get across, this is how I want to say this – but how am I going to work this words in?” And she helped me with that. That’s what co-writing is all about, you know? You sit down and talk about a subject matter – if I went through something, or some experience. It’s so funny: I would call her and so, “Oh my God! You’ll never believe what happened! We’ve got to write a song about this!” And she sits down and I sit down and it was really interesting because she sent me an e-mail, or like a note, after the record was done. And she was like, “I’m so proud of you.” She really did help me be honest, because sometimes I might be like, “Oh my God, I don’t know if I should say that. It might be too honest or too whatever,” you know? And she would say, “You really need to do this. You really need to do this for you.” So she really gave me the confidence to just open up and not really care. Just be myself… None of the things on the record were original. Every kind of song has been written before. Every feeling that you feel: They’re not original. It’s just your take on things – and everyone’s different. She’s like, “I write music all the time, but it was still great writing with you, because your take’s a little different from mine. It inspires me in a different way.” It was fun. We had a good time. It’s like therapy, you know?

WW: So it sounds as if your songwriting relationship with her has changed over the years, and you’re taking a stronger role now than maybe at the very beginning.

HD: Of course, of course. Before, the song would almost be finished, and I’d come in and say, “I want this song to be more about this, so let’s change this lyric to this.”

WW: But now you feel like a full partner.

HD: Yeah.

WW: Like a lot of celebrities, you’ve branched out into some other business areas: a clothing line and a fragrance line. Tell me about those projects. What’s the latest?

HD: The fragrance, I’m getting ready to have the spring scent come out, which is a little more floral. And it’s called Wrapped With Love, and it’s a version of With Love that has different notes in it. It’s not as heavy as With Love, because With Love came out in the fall-wintertime. This is a little more flowery. It’s lighter, and it has a different bottle. It’s really cute. We don’t have an exact date for when it’ll come out, but within the next few months, it’ll be in stores. And the clothing line, we’re working on. Fall should come out in early September. I’m working on a juniors line, but there’s no specific date, because I’ve been so busy and I don’t want to just throw it together. I really want to have it perfect.

WW: I came across a Forbes article that had you listed as one of the richest performers under the age of 25. It said you made $15 million in 2005. Is that kind of figure hard for you to grasp?

HD: It doesn’t feel real. I definitely don’t live like that. So just to think about it is kind of scare. As much as I work and realize it’s my job, and that I have to make a profit, because it’s how I support myself, I don’t know… It doesn’t even seem real.

WW: When you have so many products, you’re kind of turning yourself into a brand name. Do you have people telling you, “You need to do this or that, because it’ll be good for the brand”?

HD: I don’t like to think of myself as a brand. I’m not a brand. I’m a person, I’m an artist, I’m creative. That’s just not an appealing thing. I think maybe someone would think that because I have so much stuff going on, but I’m not a brand. I think I definitely make choices based on what’s going to be good for my clothing line and what’s going to be good for my fragrance. But isn’t that how you run businesses? Making decisions and doing things that will be good for your career? Different aspects of it? Definitely there are things that come along with my job that I don’t always want to do, but that’s the same with anyone’s job.

WW: And yet your name is definitely used to sell these products, much as Donald Trump’s name is used to promote buildings. It seems that you understand that relationship, but that you don’t want to think of yourself as only a brand.

HD: It’s interesting. Working with this new clothing line that I want to launch within the next year, it’s not going to have my name all over it. It’s going to have its own separate name, and it’s not like my face is going to be all over it. I think that my clothing line, stuff, is more like that, because it’s for a younger audience, and a younger demographic. And as I get older, I definitely want to keep those fans who are younger, and who enjoy my music and my acting. But I’m going to be doing things that they may not be as interested in, and I want to keep some things just for them. They care more about having my face everywhere, having my name on it, and I want to do that for them. That’s really what stuff is about. As much as we’ve made it a mini-fashion line, my name really does help sell it, and kids like that. It’s nice to get to have the best of both worlds and really think of it as a business. With younger people, that’s what sells, and with older people, that doesn’t sell. And so I get to be a little more creative and a little more fashion.

WW: It sounds like you’re hoping that the fans who came along early on can go through the same transition you’re going through – to follow you through your career.

HD: I hope so. I hope they stay fans. I’m getting older, and they’re getting older. It’s nice to grow up a little bit and challenge yourself and do new things, and I think they feel that way, too.

WW: On the film front, I understand you have a film coming out called War, Inc., with John Cusack. Tell me a little bit about it. From the description, it sounds a little bit like Grosse Pointe Blank.

HD: I wouldn’t say it’s like Grosse Pointe Blank, but he does play an assassin. He was an assassin in Grosse Pointe, right?

WW: Yes, he was.

HD: But this takes place in a made-up country called Turagistan, and it’s kind of like a dark comedy about war and about this country that we’re getting ready to go and hold this huge convention and Americanize this place that’s not really supposed to be like that. It’s like we blow it up to build it up again and be the heroes. And it just kind of shows how wrong that is.

WW: What’s your role?

HD: I play this Eastern European pop star who’s under the control of these very powerful, dirty business guys. She’s a big talker but she is kind of like overtly sexual and really rude and crude and loves to make people feel uncomfortable, but it’s really because she’s scared and kind of young inside. I’m making her sound horrible, but she’s really quite funny. And there are redeeming parts of the movie that make you like her, and make you see that she’s stuck in this place that’s horrible – it’s like a war zone. And her only way out, she thinks, is John. There’s a big twist at the end of the movie. And Ben Kingsley’s in the movie, and Marisa Tomei and Joan Cusack is in the movie. It’s really funny, but it really opens your eyes to so much.

WW: This sounds like this is an opportunity to play with your own image. Was that one of the appeals for you?

HD: You know what? The first time I heard about the script, I thought, “Oh God, I don’t want to play a pop star. No thanks.” And then I read the script, because my agent was like, “John wants to talk to you on the phone,” and I was like, “What?” So I read the script and I fell in love with it. I was nervous at first, because it really is such a departure from any movie that I’ve done, my own personal singing career, and who I am in real life. This character’s really out there and really different, and I was like, people might think I’m trying to be so far away from who I really am. But that’s what acting’s all about – challenging yourself and stepping outside of who you are getting to play around. And John really helped me with that. It was fun.

WW: Would you like to be in more films like this, where you’re going in different directions than you have in the past?

HD: Definitely. I want to grow as an actress and do things that are different. I think now that I’m an older, there’s more of an opportunity to do that. I’m not saying I don’t want to do funny movies or movies the whole family can go see. But definitely creative, artsy, more offbeat movies, I’m very interested in right now.

Three albums: Hilary Duff, Metamorphosis and now Dignity. How do you rate your progress as a musician?
Every song of mine is personal. I couldn’t help but write about things that affected me. I was half in a relationship making the record and then half not, so there were a lot of different emotions that I covered.

One song in Dignity that holds a special place for you?
I get a lot of my song ideas when I’m driving. Sometimes a title comes to my mind and I know there’s something there. With this song ‘Dignity’, I wanted ‘raise your dignity’ to be the title and to be the chorus. Those words just stuck in my head. I thought young girls could relate to them.

You walked the red carpet all over the world even before you had a driver’s lisence. Today you have both, from teen sensation to a young woman. How does the journey feel?
Well, I’m 19 now, it’s a natural step. I don’t think I’m a full-grown adult. My mom moved out a year and a half ago, but my sister Haylie (22) and I live together. It has been more of a natural evolution than a conscious transformation.

TV shows, movies, music and perfumes. Most people your age would still be planning what to do in life. But you’ve already achieved what most don’t in an entire lifetime. What next?
I only hope that I continue my acting and music long enough, though I like to try different things and have fun. As for my fashion label, its so much fun to be a girl and play around with so many looks. I never like doing too much of one thing. It’s more fun when you mix your street-wear with high fashion.

Sometimes when we achieve so much at such a young age, there is a fear of a burnout. Does this bother you?
A lot of people keep me in check. It’s not exactly hard being so young and having so much. But young people in Hollywood get used to being told ‘yes’ all the time. When you get everything you want at a young age, you become bored. You’re like, "What’s next? What else is there?" I think that might be the problem with those who have it all. But I’m thankful for what I have.

On a lighter note, what does Hilary Duff like in terms of movies, music and men? What is your chill-out mantra?
My tastes are all over the place. I love punk and eighties’ dance. When I go out, it’s to be with friends, which is almost the same as hanging out at home. I don’t go out for ‘the scene’. I’m not looking, but if the right guy comes along, I’ll be ready.

You’ve done a bit of Madonna in the movie ‘Material Girl’. In the current album there is a song called ‘Dreamer’. Did you ever dream that one day you could also be producing music albums like her? Do you plan to do a song with her?

Hilary Duff featured in LA Direct

Hilary Duff is featured on the August 2007 cover of LA Direct Magazine. And also the cover story

Finally, someone is showing these Hollywood wrecking-balls that you can grab the media spotlight in positive ways. It doesn’t always have to be about endangering lives or nervous breakdowns. Other females in the entertainment industry are continually crashing their image in lows never before thought possible, and Duff’s looking and feeling better than ever.

The 19 year-old singer/songwriter/actress has just started her own national tour for her latest pop album, Dignity. She graced the covers of five magazines in July, and none of them were candid shots of a drunken Hilary, or a strung-out Hilary, or a tear-streaked, underwear-flashing, I’m-a-walking-disaster photo. Even after a double-blow last year, featuring the break-up of her two-and-a-half-year relationship with Joel from the band Good Charlotte, as well as her parents’ decision to file for divorce.

“I’m not that person who goes to fancy restaurants all the time and wants to be seen everywhere,” Duff said in a recent interview with Seventeen Magazine. “Yes, it’s fun every once in a while, but I’m not going to go places where I know I’m going to be photographed.” It’s about time someone was able to handle the responsibility. And Duff’s ability to do this is what makes her far more interesting than the many, many others who aren’t up for the job.

The most dramatic measures she’s taken lately involve going on a severe health kick. While she’s previously been scorned in the public eye for being both overweight and underweight, she recently has gotten into an incredibly sane health regime. The new-and-improved Hilary Duff diet includes balancing all types of foods, including carbs, as well as pilates four times a week.

“I want to inspire people to have a healthy mindset,” she told Shape Magazine last month. “Everyone needs food that gives them energy they need to be active — and they should have fun.”

“A lot of people keep me in check,” Duff says to Maxim’s Alison Prato. “It’s not exactly hard being so young and having so much — I’m thankful. But young people in Hollywood get so used to being told ‘yes’ all the time, and that’s not reality. When you get everything you want at a young age, you become bored. You’re like, ‘What’s next? What else is there?’ I think this might be the problem.”
In Duff’s case, she’s got a solid background in self-entertainment. She seems to have a solid enough head on her shoulders that she can find new and interesting ways to challenge herself. Making bigger movies, writing better songs; there are many places she can take herself that don’t include celebrity rehab or jail.

The songs on her latest album, Dignity, were a direct product of her break-up with Joel and dealing with her parents’ divorce. She decided to channel all the emotion into an artistic creation instead of drowning it all in substance abuse. This alone may prove why she is thriving right now; Duff may be an actual artist.

“When we broke up I’d already written a few songs about us, and I was like, ‘Can I use this stuff now? It’s so personal,’” Duff tells Prato. “But I ended up using everything because I wanted the album to be honest. I’m not perfect, and I don’t have a perfect family. The album lets people inside my life — not the life everybody thinks they know or that they read about, but my real life.” There’s something to be respected for the fact that she not only wrote her own songs, but they seem to be curtain-less windows into her life and her views.

“The song [“Dignity”] is about people living in LA,” Duff tells Prato, “and how easy it is to lose yourself here. Sometimes this town is so shocking. People think they can throw money around and get whatever they want. Dignity isn’t something you’re born with — it’s something you have to work on.”

Duff isn’t one to hang out with the typical Hollywood crowd. She’s usually found with her sister and her best friend. Being an outsider never had so many positive effects before. It takes a real backbone to resist the Hollywood “in-crowd,” and that’s why we can be certain that Duff is one of the stronger stars in the LA atmosphere.

Hilary Duff's Phone interview with Victoria Times @ Canada.com

"As much as I complain about it, because you’re doing the same thing every day, I love it,"

the singer-actress says of the tour, which stops tomorrow in Vancouver at Pacific Coliseum and Saturday in Victoria at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.

"There’s nothing you can compare to this. It’s excitement every single night, and a challenge to get better and do something new and inspire people."…

the peppy performer — who entered the North American spotlight in 2001 as the titular character in Disney’s Lizzie McGuire franchise — appears at ease with the pace.

"I have learned to deal with it since my TV show. That’s my life and this is how it’s going to be for me. When I was younger it was harder to deal with."

Duff technically isn’t "old," which she jokingly calls herself, but she is something of a veteran; she has been in the public eye since she was 10… In an effort to grow with her fans, when it came time to record Dignity she broke free from the disposable teen-pop of her past. It was a potentially dangerous creative leap, she says, but one that even her co-star agreed she should run with.

"I was telling John (Cusack) that I was nervous," she says. "And he said, ‘If this record sells 10,000 copies or three million copies is it going to make a difference? Would you change it?’ And I said no. I was just happy to have been able to have the experience, because it totally changed me."…

For once, Duff says, people outside of her core audience had good things to say.

"It was such a relief. For the first time, I was so happy and so relieved. You set yourself up for failure because I’m Top 40 and sing pop music and it’s not cool. But there’s a market for everything. Just because (a magazine) has a certain taste doesn’t mean they have everyone’s taste."…

"I’m not the celebrity who likes to be photographed. But I have gotten more at peace with it."…

"Paparazzi know where my home is and they wait outside on the weekends. But I definitely am not the celebrity that does tonnes of controversial things, so I don’t get it as bad as other people, I don’t think. When you’re walking into a club — yeah, they are going to be there. But if you go to a restaurant that’s low-key, they are probably not going to be there. Lots of celebrities complain about it, but they love it."

Duff says she is like any normal 19-year-old (though we don’t know many whose personal wealth was estimated at $15 million in 2005). If she doesn’t feel like going out, and getting dressed up in order to do so, she stays out of the public eye.

"I work so hard, so when I have time off, the last thing I want to do is feel like I have to look a certain way or watch what I do."

She has sold more than 13 million CDs, made movies, and created a perfume and clothing line. Tonight she brings her tour to the Pacific Coliseum. Buzz Bishop spent 24 seconds with Hilary Duff on the phone from Edmonton.

24hrs: What's it like being young in Hollywood? Are there people dragging you into trouble, or do you have to go and find it?

Hilary: It's everywhere, it's really easy to find it. I love L.A. I live there, it's my home, but it's really easy to lose yourself in that town. You have to really know what you believe in and stick with it and have good friends.

24hrs: So being focused on yourself and what you want to put out there has kept your head above it?

Hilary: That and my family. I don't like to live very publicly, like so many people do. I feel like I've worked so much as it is, I want privacy.

24hrs: For most of us, running into an ex at the mall would be painful. How is it for you to see your ex (Joel Madden with new girlfriend Nicole Richie) paraded across the tvs and tabloids this week?

Hilary: It's not really a problem for me to deal with it. I want them to be happy. Joel and I ended on very good terms and we ended knowing that it was the right thing to do and it made us both happy. So it's not hard for me to see it.

24hrs: You still balance music and movies very well. You've got three more movie projects coming down the line, including War Inc (with Ben Kingsley and John Cusack) set to debut at the Toronto Film Festival. You've said this role is controversial. What's it all about?

Hilary: It's a dark comedy. It's about war and how Americans go into a place and blow it up and take it over and try to act like heroes. It's pretty messed up. I play this over-sexed pop star that has a big spark, but not much to back it up. One thing that was so much fun about doing this movie, is that it's nothing like who I am. It's nothing like my music, I look totally different in it. It's an artsy independent movie and getting to work with all those people was a treat.

24hrs: When did you become a hockey fan?

Hilary: I don't know anything about hockey.

24hrs: Well, with Mike Comrie (NY Islanders) on your arm in some photos, you're going to have to learn something.

Hilary: Do you want to give me a crash course?

24hrs: Get down to Vancouver and get a good Canucks jersey on your back!

Hilary Duff, 19, has come a long way since starring as Disney Channel's Lizzie Maguire. She's now no longer a mere actress or singer. Like so many stars these days, she's a brand, with a fashion line for teens and a cyberspace shingle hung on the teen community website Stardoll.com. But she still acts and sings: Two movies are coming, and she is touring in Canada to support her latest album, Dignity. (The U.S. leg starts Aug. 6 in Everett, Wash.) USA TODAY catches up with her:

Q: Will your tour costumes show off the body you worked so hard to attain?

A: The costumes are going to be amazing. There are four wardrobe changes, and all of them are either mini dresses or skirts. A lot of them are washed metallic fabrics with big holes cut out on the side for a retro look. There are motorcycle vests and burlesque-looking fringe micro-miniskirts.

Q: How will you maintain your healthy physique while on the road?

A: You have to discipline yourself. We ask for lots of fruits and veggies, but I do cheat in moderation with pizza.

Q: What is one concert convention you will never do?

A: Never pour water on people, because if it happened to me, I'd be (peeved).

Q: What friends and family will be joining you on the tour?

A: No one for the whole time. Traveling so much gets hard on my mom (Susan), being away from her house and her dog. She'll come for the first couple of shows with her dog and then visit a couple more times. Same with my sister (Haylie) and friends. My dogs, Jack and Lola, both come tour with me, which is fun. It makes it easier for me to be in a hotel or bus all the time.

Q: You started the tour in Canada. Any special memories from Canadian tours?

A: Canada was the first time I was ever around snow, and it could be freezing. Sometimes it was so cold we couldn't go outside for a week at a time, and I didn't want to get sick. But sometimes if I had a couple of days off, we would just go play in the snow and get big cardboard boxes to slide down hills.

Q: What fun things do you do during the show?

A: In between the new songs, there's a medley we cut together of fans' favorite (Duff) songs. And I remade Love Is a Battlefield. And then we do No Woman, No Cry in the middle of So Yesterday.

Q: How are you still like a kid?

A: We have these stupid little motorbikes we ride around backstage, and we play pranks on people.

Q: When you look out into your audience, how have the faces changed?

A: From the beginning, there of course were little girls, but there were also college-student girls there. And boys. Pretty diverse. But it has gotten older as I've gotten older.
And kids don't want to bring their parents to the concerts. I love that, because I remember when I got to do that. But it also cuts ticket sales in half. It makes everything a little smaller now during this transitional phase.

Hilary Duff on Soulmates

Hilary Duff may not believe in soul mates, but she does want to get married. The two statements are a little weird together, but this is from contactmusic:

Singer HILARY DUFF is unconvinced she has just one soulmate, insisting it’s unnatural to have only one life partner. The star is currently single after splitting from Good Charlotte rocker Joel Madden - who has since moved on to a new relationship with socialite Nicole Richie. Although Duff is on the lookout for a new man, she admits it’s doubtful she will spend all her life with one partner. She says, "I don’t believe in having one partner for your whole life, but I hope I get married. I want to have a husband and two kids and a nice little life baking pies. "I’m quite romantic. It’s definitely important to have someone to make you feel special."

Hilary Duff wants someone who knows what it means to be in show biz, but also who can have fun:

She says, "The most important thing on my list (for boyfriend requirements) would be that he has to be in the business, so he understands how hard it can be, with the lifestyle, but that he has to have other interests outside of work. "He has to be adventurous and teach me new things, and have a strong faith, and make me laugh, and be cute. I’m kind of crazy, so I like boys who don’t take themselves too seriously."

Hopefully a step up from her first crush - John Travolta!

I work with lots of different charities that help animals to sick kids, kids without homes and feeding the hungry. One charity I’m really focused on right now is "Blessing in a Back Pack" with USA Harvest. We go into underpriviledged shools every week and give back packs filled with food for kids to take home over the weekend because most of the kids weren’t getting any hot meals or the food they needed, except for the food they got at school during the week. After we started the program tests scores improved, focus levels in class improved and for some reason most of the grafitti disappeared around the school.

living in LA it never gets to hot or cold so its always nice outside. i love the summer because its so fun to get to go to the beach with friends and us girls can wear cute summer clothes! i happpen to love christmas time and thanksgiving, when its a little chillier out as well

i am starting my tour in Canada and then going to be touring the US all summer. I don’t have dates for Europe yet, but I know it’ll be in Sept/Oct. I’m excited because we’re going to places we haven’t been before like South America, India, and Africa!

I work with lots of different charities that help animals to sick kids, kids without homes and feeding the hungry. One charity I’m really focused on right now is "Blessing in a Back Pack" with USA Harvest. We go into underpriviledged shools every week and give back packs filled with food for kids to take home over the weekend because most of the kids weren’t getting any hot meals or the food they needed, except for the food they got at school during the week. After we started the program tests scores improved, focus levels in class improved and for some reason most of the grafitti disappeared around the school.
