Duff shows she’s more than fluff

By Lauren Carter
Friday, August 31, 2007 - Updated: 07:05 PM EST

One thing is clear after Thursday night’s performance at the Bank of America Pavilion: Hilary Duff isn’t just moonlighting as a musician.
The former Lizzie McGuire, successful film actress and teen-pop princess is taking her role in music seriously, and it shows.

Judging by the set of teens, tweens and parent chaperones in the audience, Duff still caters to a younger crowd, but does so with the air and style of a young sophisticate and the positivity of a motivational speaker.

And while Duff may not be this generation’s power vocalist, her high-pitched, angelic vocals held up well throughout the night, as on the “Laguna Beach” theme song and crowd sing-along “Come Clean.”

There was plenty to focus on during Duff’s 90-minute set: multicolored light shows, urban-sexy backup dancers, Duff prancing around the stage and working in light choreography, as on the butt-bumping fun of “Never Stop.”

Duff’s arsenal of glam-sexy jumper dresses, glittery tunics, sequined frocks and short flapper skirts helped keep things interesting, while her pre-song speeches about following dreams and ignoring negativity likely made parents happy they brought their children to the show.

Duff explored different genres, working in the disco flavor of “Play With Fire” and “Danger,” the pop/rock of “The Getaway” and the synth-heavy power pop of “With Love,” which garnered mega-screams from the crowd.

The 19-year-old threw in a few cover songs as well, including the Go-Gos’ “Our Lips Are Sealed” and Pat Benatar’s “Love Is a Battlefield,” with Duff lending sweetness to the gritty chorus while her backup crew got into their best fist-pumping, pseudo-tough stances.

Duff’s double encore included an impressive reworking of Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus,” and even though few audience members were likely old enough to know the original, it didn’t seem to matter.

Boston’s own Click 5, a shaggy-haired boy band somewhere between the Beatles and Backstreet Boys, provided adequate scream warm-up, especially with the spunky pop/rock of “Headlight Disco.”

DVD Review: Raise Your Voice

Written by
Cara de Pescado

Published August 31, 2007

Raise Your Voice isn’t a Disney movie, but it could have been. It is the story of Terri Fletcher finding her voice. It begins with a happy teen, Terri (Hilary Duff), and her older brother Paul (Jason Ritter). Unlike most teen siblings I’ve come across, they get along famously. Terri and Paul sneak out to go to a concert and are in a car wreck on the way home. Paul dies and Terri doesn’t want to ever sing again. The problem with that is Paul sent in a DVD to a prestigious summer music program as his sister’s application and she was accepted. From there you can guess the rest; Terri makes new friends, discovers new love, and once again finds her voice.

For those looking for a wholesome movie, Raise Your Voice definitely fits the bill. Hilary Duff’s Terri sings in the church choir, listens to Christian music, and finds solace in going to church. Those who find Duff attractive will find lots of shots of her in tight tank tops. And those who enjoy the feel-good movies that could be on Disney Channel or Lifetime will enjoy the message.

That being said, Raise Your Voice is a bunch of clichés thrown together in an attempt to be a modern day Fame but failing. The script is lacking, the acting isn’t great, and the music isn’t exactly compelling. Though to be perfectly honest, pointing out all the ways the film fails to soar is sort of like beating a dead horse. But to be fair, it is only a PG-rated film. The thing I found most distracting was the presence of a lot of “pretty shots” that really didn’t add anything but time.

The Special Features on the DVD include five deleted scenes, a reel of outtakes, a behind the scenes look at the making of the movie, an orchestra sequence showing clips from the movie and the recording of the score, a music video for Hilary Duff’s “Fly”, an interactive jam where you make your own music, the theatrical trailer, and previews for other New Line releases. In addition to that material, the DVD has features and web links accessible on your computer running Microsoft Windows. I don’t have a PC, so I am not sure what those materials might be.

The DVD itself is dual-sided with Widescreen or Full Screen versions of the movie on either side. The audio is Dolby Digital 5.1 in English with options for English or Spanish subtitles.

Overall, the movie isn’t one I’d rush out to buy but it is 107 minutes of harmless entertainment the family can watch together.

Hilary Duff not getting The Best of Reviews

Poor Duffster, her man leaves her and within months impregnates another woman and now she is not getting the best of reviews on her music.

Hilary Duff has begun her tour and let’s just say she isn’t getting much love from the critics.

There was an article about her tour basically saying that she really doesn’t have a good voice. They did however say that her music is good club music because of the high tunes and her squeaky voice. They did mention that she should not sing any ballads.

I don’t think Hilary Duff thinks she has an amazing voice.
She knows she is an entertainer more than a singer. It would be silly if she thought she had Christina Aguilera’s or Whitney Houston’s voice. The girl is just having fun with her music.

Young philanthropist to meet Hilary Duff

Times Colonist
Published: Thursday, August 30, 2007

A young local philanthropist will be treated like a pop star when her dream of meeting Hilary Duff comes true next week.

Jeneece Edroff, 12, has neurofibromatosis, a genetic condition that causes tumor growth in tissues surrounding nerves. But that hasn't stopped her from raising more than $640,000 for various charities -- including Variety, Cops for Cancer and the British Columbia Neurofibromatosis Foundation.

After meeting Jeneece, Peter Devries, store manager of the Hillside Zellers, called the HBC head office to see if he could make her dream come true. Devries told Zellers marketing activation manager Daniel Rozak of her good deeds and her dream. Rozak got on the phone to Duff's staff and Jeneece will now be off to Toronto for three days.

She'll be given a $1,000 Zellers shopping spree and put up in a swanky downtown hotel. She'll be supplied with Duff merchandise and have here own professional photo shoot, including hair and makeup.

Then she'll see Duff in concert and, after the show, go backstage.

Duff drawas young crowd

Thursday, August 30, 2007
By Laura Silvius
Contributing writer

It's hard to believe it was four years ago that Hilary Duff took that plunge that is inevitable of all tween icons in this day and age (especially those under Disney's control) and released her first album.

When Duff, 19, returned to the state fair for a concert Wednesday (her last one was in 2005), one might have expected her fans to have grown up with her. But most looked barely old enough to warrant the label "tween," which applies to children between the ages of 8 and 12.
Perhaps it is Duff's still-wholesome image that prevents her demographic from aging as she does. But she plays the part of the tween queen wonderfully, complete with a full-on light show, costume changes, background dancers and supplemental video.

The costumes and choreography had more sex appeal than anticipated for a show geared toward such an age group, but the tweens didn't mind. In fact, Duff seemed quite at home in her tween-dom. Duff performed primarily songs from her most recent album, "Dignity," which premiered in April. Though not without talent, Duff's voice varied from sounding relatively common to downright meager. At times she sings as clear as a bell, at other times she's obviously straining.

Duff doesn't possess a strong voice, but it's a distinct one, and she moves from song to song without much effort. The arrangements and back-up singers managed to help her find her way through the more difficult spots, but often it seemed that the talented individuals on stage with Duff were having more fun than she was.

Opening for Duff was The Click Five, a rock band that took the stage in the snappy costumes that are almost a trademark, making them look reminiscent of the Beatles (though with slightly shaggier hair). It was clear who had attended the concert especially for the band, because they averaged five to seven years over those who came wearing Hilary Duff T-shirts.

The quintet warmed up the crowd beautifully. Promoting their new album, "Modern Minds and Pastimes," which was released in June, the band played with strong lead vocals in Kyle Patrick, who has been with the band less than a year, and an undeniable bass talent in Ethan Mentzer. The other members of the band are Joe Guese on guitar, Ben Romans on keyboard and Joey Zehr on drums.

The five come from Boston: all but Zehr attended the Berklee College of Music. They have one hit from 2005, "Just The Girl," and the single "Jenny" from the new album.

A couple of the songs sounded like one another, but for the most part the band demonstrated an irrefutable appeal, and audience members nodded their heads in time.

Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie Spotted in New York again together, HOLDING Hands, FLIRTING EACH OTHER, and DINING TOGETHER

Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie in New York holding hands together at Fifth Avenue on 28th August. Read the gossip at Hello.

After splitting from Good Charlotte rocker Joel Madden in November last year, romance is on the cards again for teen idol Hilary Duff. The actress enjoyed an evening out at Hollywood hotspot Opera on Monday night with her hockey ace beau Mike Comrie, before jetting off with him to the Big Apple on Tuesday. There they enjoyed a stroll hand-in-hand down Fifth Avenue.

While it's still early days for the twosome, things couldn't be going better according to sources close to the couple. "They're always together and can't keep their hands off each other," commented a friend. The multi-talented actress and singer first went public about her relationship with the Canadian-born New York Islanders hockey player during a July 25 dinner date at celebrity hotspot Georgio Baldi in Santa Monica, California.

Not long afterwards Mike accompanied the 19-year-old to Winnipeg where she kicked off the Canadian leg of her North American Dignity tour. The trip also gave him the chance to show her round his Edmonton home town. And if love continues to blossom it may well be Hilary's turn to support the 26-year-old sportsman when he takes to the ice for the 2007-2008 NHL season in early October.

Hilary Duff proves to be the anti-Lindsay Lohan

Watching Hilary Duff sing - or, perhaps at times, pretend to sing - in front of a meager crowd of 3,523 Thursday night at the Target Center, one couldn't help but think: "Lindsay Lohan, this could have been your life."

After all, both Duff and Lohan shot to fame thanks to the relentless Disney machine - the former through the "Lizzie McGuire" TV show, the latter via the "The Parent Trap" big-screen remake. And both have pursued music in addition to acting, with Lohan releasing two discs to Duff's three.

But where Lohan is busy pleading no contest to drug and DUI charges, Duff seems to be running out the clock on her tween-pop career. As canny as Disney may be at launching careers, said careers tend to have as much longevity as a training bra. To wit, Miley "Hannah Montana" Cyrus is the flavor of this month, and her Oct. 21 gig in the same Minneapolis venue will likely attract a crowd three or four times larger than Duff's.

Duff is out in support of her latest album, "Dignity," which sees her chasing a more grown-up dance floor sound, similar to the stuff Kylie Minogue was doing back in her post-"I Should Be So Lucky" days. And some of it is pretty terrific, at least considering the source.

"Danger" props Duff up with a sexy, throbbing beat that nearly lives up to the song's title, while "Dignity" takes aim at vacuous celebutants including, one assumes, Nicole Richie, who is now pregnant with the child of Duff's ex, Joel Madden. Parents in the house surely appreciated the cover of Pat Benatar's "Love Is a Battlefield" (complete with the original video's absurd dance routines) and Duff's remade/remodeled take on Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" (now dubbed "Reach Out and Touch Me").

Unfortunately, the sleeker and darker new material doesn't exactly mesh well with Duff's bright-eyed, star-making tween hits ("Beat of My Heart," "Why Not"), which gave the briskly paced 95-minute show plenty of unexpected mood swings, even when she was occasionally able to bridge the two eras, like in the endearingly campy "Never Stop."

While she may not be the strongest singer - a significant portion of her vocals sounded pre-recorded - Duff proved to be a bubbly, likable presence on stage, giving the night far more of an actual concert feel than, say, that awful Cheetah Girls show last year at the X. And while the crowd was modest in size, it was monstrous in enthusiasm, adorably chanting "Hil-a-ry, Hil-a-ry" and doing the wave while waiting for the show to start. Duff not only returned that love, she actually pushed her audience, ever so gently, into new territory. And that's far more than La Lohan can say, right?

Hilary Duff helps collect food, Harvest program marks 20 years

By Sara Cunningham

scunningham@courier-journal.com
The Courier-Journal

Stan Curtis was on his way to a meeting this morning when a man stopped him on the street and asked for a meal.

“So I took him into the Hyatt,” Curtis said.

The act was not unusual for Curtis. Finding a way to feed those without food has been his passion for two decades.

The Louisville resident founded Kentucky Harvest in 1987. It grew into the international food-sharing program U.S.A. Harvest.

More than 200 people, including actress and singer Hilary Duff and other celebrities, celebrated his vision today over lunch at St. Vincent DePaul’s Open Hand Kitchen on Jackson Street.

“Good things happen because good people stand up and make them happen,” Metro Mayor Jerry Abramson said.

U.S.A. Harvest, in conjunction with Kentucky Harvest, has been able to provide more than 13 billion pounds of food to more than 5,400 agencies in more than 130 cities in the United States and in other countries, according to its Web site.

It collects food and distributes it to shelters, food banks and other charities that feed people.

Duff joined the cause after she and Curtis met several years ago while they were working to distribute food in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina, he said. And before a performance at the Louisville Palace last night, she met with 186 fans who had collected 1,000 cans of food for U.S.A. Harvest — enough to provide 500,000 meals, organizers said.

“I touched her leg, I touched her leg,” squealed one of them, Mackenzie Stovall, 10, of Louisville, to no one in particular after meeting Duff.

Mackenzie spent more than three weeks collecting the cans but said it was worth it to get a chance to be near Duff. “It was awesome,” she said, holding her hand up for a reporter to see. “I may not wash it at least for a couple of days.”

For others, meeting Duff was an opportunity to do more than just touch a celebrity.
Earlier in the day, Remington Maxwell, a teenager from Jeffersonville, Ind., managed to slip Duff a CD from Remington’s band, the Hightops. By the time she met Duff later at the Palace, the singer remembered the band and had already listened to the music. “She said she liked it,” Remington said. “Hopefully she’ll give it to people who’ll make us rich.”

Duff said the CD was “cute.” She laughed politely and said “That’s funny” when asked if she would pass it on to record producers.

Earlier, at the lunch, Curtis said of Duff that “any father in the world would be proud to have her as a daughter.”

Duff, near tears, called the other people in the room — most of them program volunteers or donors — “inspirations.”

“I’m overwhelmed to be in a room of so many accomplished adults,” she said, adding that she got involved with program because her mother raised her to “stand for something.”

At the luncheon, U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth, D-3rd District, told the crowd that Louisville has many food-oriented things to be proud of, including the hot brown, but “there’s nothing that can give this community more pride than to say we originated the Harvest concept.”

For his part, Curtis said very little about what he had done and instead told stories about others in the group who had helped make his plan a success. He said he hopes to go out of business every day because that would mean there was no longer a need for what he does. Until that happens, he’ll just keep “food-raising,” he said.

“We’re doing the right thing,” he said. “Become more determined, become more dedicated. Let’s be stronger together.”

Reporter Jason Riley contributed to this story.

What do the guys say about Hilary...?

During her dialogue with the crowd it was apparent of Hilary’s thankfulness to the crowd which at times caused her to pause. She also confessed that even though it might sound cheesy, you should follow your dreams - which proved to be the introduction to her single, Fly. All in all the set ran a little long for the younger crowd, but I doubt there were any complaints. A good night for all ages… what are you waiting for?

Hilary Duff Disney Adventures in India

Hilary Duff talks to Disney Adventure Magazine in India for their August 2007 edition.

Q Do you prefer acting to singing or doing both simoultaneously?
A I love both, but if I were to pick one, I’d say singing.
Q Who are your favorite singers? Do you idolize anyone?
A I love Nelly Furtardo! I think she’s really cool. I love how she started out and where she’s reached now. Everything about her just works.
Q If you could be or play the voice of a Disney character, who would it be?
A I loved Minnie Mouse when I was little.
Q Do you have a message for the readers of Disney Adventures?
A Hey guys! Thanks so much for your love and support for Lizzie! Remember, always follow your dreams. Love you!
Q Your mom is super cool! What is your relationship with her?
A My mom, my sister and I have always had an incredible relationship. She’s (mom is) smart and tough. And there’s still so much for me to learn from her. But I need her in a different way now than I did when I was 16.
Q What was it like playing Lizzie McGuire’s character?
A It was a great experience - quite like a normal teen’s life.
Q What intrigues you the most about India?
A I haven’t been to India as yet but I’ve heard its beautiful! I would love to visit.

"War, Inc" Delayed till 2008

Officialy, its now reported that War, Inc will be delayed till 2008.

Thought Hilary had announced that War, Inc would premiere this September, at Toronoto International Film Festival, it won't happen now.

As told by John Causak...

A: The movie I wrote was with Mark Leyner, who’s a great satirist — he used to do a lot of stuff for the New Yorker — and Jeremy Pikser, who wrote Reds and Bulworth with Warren Beatty. It is about an assassin who’s looking to take out a Middle East oil minister, but a lot of complications get in the way. It’s being called War, Inc. while it’s being sold to foreign markets. But it will probably have another title before it comes out next year. It’s wild. The cast includes my sister (Joan), Ben Kingsley and Hilary Duff, so that tells you something right there.

Hilary Duff now with Polish dance Remixers WAWA

Stand by this summer as US superstar singer Hilary Duff returns alongside Polish dance remixers WAWA with the sensational Stranger, released on Hollywood Records via the Angel Music Group on September 03rd 2007.

Stranger sees Hilary continue her musical reinvention, hooking up with WAWA to produce an infectious slice of dance/pop heaven that is already topping club charts across the UK and the rest of the world.

The track has been building as a very hot limited promo since the start of summer and was dropped peak-time at the holy-grail of superclubs, Space in Ibiza, during the opening party. It was also awarded ‘Tune of the Week’ in their weekly podcast.

Co-written by Hilary herself, the lyrics reveal a relationship that is picture perfect in public, but cold behind closed doors.

Stanger is also included on Hilary’s critically acclaimed electro album Dignity. Here’s what the UK critics said about this confident collection of cool pop:

Dignity sees Hilary metamorphose into a moody, electro princess. The best tracks hold their own against Kylie. Duff as ever is charmingly chameleon-like The Guardian

It is pop of the sleekest kind. Hilary has been reinvented. Music Week

All in all this new direction works and might surprise a few ears. The Sun

She’s the hottest singer turned actress. Hilary’s fabulously camp new album will bring disco back with a feast of floor fillers. Company Magazine

Dignity debuted at No.4 in the USA, continuing Hilary’s amazing run of success. Her US No.1 solo debut album Metamorphosis sold 4 times platinum, followed by her self-titled and Most Wanted collections, both of which sold 3 million records. In the UK Hilary has hit the Top 10 with songs Wake Up and So Yesterday. Her Most Wanted album has to date sold over 100,000 copies in the UK, achieving Gold status.

WAWA are Polish duo Vic and Bojan. Over the past six years they have built a solid reputation as top notch DJs and producers. 2007 has seen WAWA’s profile raised even further thanks to their excellent remix of Stonebridge’s SOS a No.1 club record in the UK, and their remix for JoJo which went Top 3 in the club charts and was hammered by Scott Mills on Radio One.

Hilary is currently in rehearsals for her upcoming world tour, due to hit UK shores this autumn.

While everything from jewelry to Dior bags has come her way, the best gift wasn’t the most expensive. "[Fans] have given me pickles because they know I really love them," the former Lizzie McGuire star once told Teen People. "I like it when fans do research and know a lot about me."

  2. Her father’s girlfriend

Though rumored to be about Nicole Richie, who is pregnant and dating Duff’s ex Joel Madden, the song’s inspiration runs closer to home. "My sister and I wrote that record about a woman who had a relationship with my father and kind of broke up a big part of my family," Duff told Teen People. "It’s so strange that someone would say those lyrics are written about [Nicole] when it’s so obviously not."

  3. Undercover dork

She had a long-term relationship with Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden, but Duff doesn’t only date rockers. "I like someone that’s kind of an undercover dork," said the 19-year-old, who has been spotted recently with N.Y. Islanders hockey player Mike Comrie (right). "I’m like an undercover dork. Someone who thinks the lifestyle we lead is funny."

  4. The Taylors, Home Improvement

It’s tool time! In the grunge-tastic ’90s, Hilary and Haylie found themselves enamored with the clean-cut Taylor brothers (Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Zachery Ty Bryan and Taran Noah Smith) of the long-running ABC sitcom. "When we were little we loved the Home Improvement boys," the Duff sisters once told PEOPLE.

  5. A Porsche

While the teen media mogul earns more than $12 million per movie and has sold 13 million plus albums worldwide, she hasn’t indulged in her one dream purchase: a $100,000 Porsche Cayenne Turbo, thanks to her business manager, who kindly reminded her that she was "a terrible driver" and didn’t "need that kind of power." Maybe next year!

  6. They were both dating the same guy

Back in 2002 the fellow teen queens turned bitter rivals when both were squired around town by the same blond popster: Aaron Carter. In retaliation, Lohan took potshots at Duff while hosting SNL, and Duff’s song "Haters" is rumored to be about the rehabbing starlet. By last March, the frenemies had made up at Hollywood club Teddy’s. "Whatever happened happened when we were young," Duff told PEOPLE of the five-year rift. "It’s over!"

  7. Chihuahua

Though she has other pets (most adopted from local animal shelters), the singer admits that "Miss Lola," who was purchased from a Florida pet store, is her pampered favorite. "She’s spoiled. She has a hot-pink [carrying] pouch and a cheetah-print one," Duff explained to PEOPLE. "But once you wash them a couple of times, they’re not as soft. She won’t even get in. She’s like, ‘Uh-uh.’ "

  8. Cleanliness

"There’s no competition between us or rivalry," says Duff of her big sis and sometime roommate, Haylie, 22. However, the younger Duff admits that when do they argue, it’s straight out of an episode of The Odd Couple. "I’m a little more of a clean freak and she manages to leave a trail throughout the whole house of this … stuff. So that’s something we fight about."

Duff Banned From Buying a Porsche

August 20, 2007

If you happen to see Hilary Duff on the road, I suggest you steer clear! Apparently the Duffster is such a bad driver that her manager has banned her from purchasing a Porsche Cayenne Turbo.

She says, "The car I want is a Porsche Cayenne Turbo. But my business manager doesn't want me to buy it - he says that I'm a terrible driver and don't need that kind of car.

"The other day I had a little accident because I was driving while I was on the phone. It was just a tap, nothing serious, so I thought, I'll keep going it's fine, whatever. But my business manager told me, 'You have to be careful, because people will sue you.' So I need to be cautious."

I'll be the first to admit that I'm a pretty bad driver too, isn't that our thing though? Us L.A. people all have road rage, we blame it on 'traffic' but realistically everyone here is always in such a hurry to get places...and of course it doesn't help that we're always on the phone.

Duff for president?

(Monday August 20, 2007 08:06 AM)

Actress/singer Hilary Duff insists she knows the secret to a successful career as a politician - introduce a five-day weekend.
The 19-year-old Material Girls star was posed a question on how to address problems in the U.S. if she was President.

And Duff was quick to answer, saying, "There are so many issues in America. Our involvement in the Iraq war is the most obvious, and also the way some people are treated. I would also change the weekends to workdays, and have the whole week as a weekend."

"Then I'd be a popular politician wouldn't I?"
