Teen star Hilary Duff: 'I'm very normal'The 19-year-old singer-actress, who lives with her sister, is learning to cook
By Mike CelizicTODAYShow.com contributorShe's the anti-Britney, a teen star who tries to live and perform with dignity, which also happens to be the title of Hilary Duff's fourth CD.
Between live performances of songs from the album on Rockefeller Plaza outside the TODAY studios, she talked with TODAY co-host Meredith Vieira about "Dignity" and being 19 and living on her own with her 22-year-old sister, actress and singer Haylie Duff.
"We're trying to learn how to cook so we can feed ourselves," she told Vieira. "Haylie's better than I am, but I can bake, which is good."
What makes "Dignity" different from her previous albums, which have sold more than 13 million copies, is that for the first time Duff co-wrote all the songs on it."Are you trying to be adult?" Vieira asked Duff.
"People have watched me grow up for such a long time that everybody thinks that it's this huge, new thing that I'm trying to do," she said. There was no conscious decision involved. Rather, she said, "It's like the first time that I wanted to write my own music and come up with my own sound.
"I'm a little bit older. It's where I am in my life right now."
Where she is is everywhere. "She's more than a triple-threat," Vieira observed, a singer, actress and fashion designer who also has her own perfume called "With Love," which is the name of the first single on her album. What she is not is a police-blotter entry or an alumna of a rehab center.
"'Nineteen' and 'dignity' don't go together" very often these days, Vieira observed before asking Duff what her secret is.
"I don't know," she said. "I wish there was some kind of formula I could explain. I guess it's just the way you want to be seen, and what you do in your personal time and how much you want the public to know about that.
"I'm very close to my family. I'm very normal. If I'm not working — I work pretty much every day — I hang out with my dog and I live with my sister."
She doesn't rely on material things for security, she said, adding, "My band and my crew — I rely on them and my dog."
Her appearance on the Plaza was part of the TODAY Show's Summer Concert Series. Later this summer, she and her band will be off on a month-long tour of the U.S.
"Stranger," another single she performed for an enthusiastic crowd, has reached No. 4 on MTV's TRL, and "With Love" was No. 1 on that chart.
She's also listed at No. 1 on Billboard's Dance Chart and last week was named "favorite international artist" on the Much Music Awards.
Besides the album, Duff is also doing two films, "War, Inc." with John Cusack, Ben Kingsley and Marisa Tomei; and an animated feature, "Foodfight."
Still, she has time for charitable causes, spending time a week ago to visit Normancie Elementary School in Los Angeles to stuff back packs with food for the Blessings in a Back Pack charity run by USA Harvest. Among her other charitable causes are animal rights and Kids with a Cause. After Hurricane Katrina, she donated more than $2.5 million to victims of that disaster.
A star since she was 13 and starring in the Disney Channel series "Lizzie McGuire," Duff has also had roles in "The Lizzie McGuire Movie," "Cheaper by the Dozen" and "A Cinderella Story."
As early as five years ago, she was dating singer Aaron Carter, whom she met on the set of "Lizzie McGuire." The entertainment press reported that her heart was broken when Carter left her for fellow teen star Lindsay Lohan.
Duff and Lohan have since made up, and Lohan was among the guests when "Dignity" was released.
In 2004, Duff was linked with singer Joel Madden, a relationship that ended last year.

The Stranger singer has revealed she fought constantly with her older actress sister and would play cruel tricks on her.
Hilary, 19, told Top Of The Pops magazine: "If Haylie had friends over to stay when we were little and they left me out I’d freeze their underwear!
"I’d wet the knickers, put them in the freezer and snap them to ruin them."
But she said 22-year-old Haylie always got her own back.
"Whatever I did, Haylie always got me back. Older siblings know how to be good fighters – when you’re younger you just hit back.
"I’m sure there were a couple of flying hairbrushes."Hilary added: "When Haylie and I were really young and we played games together – she’d always make me pretend to be a boy because I had short hair. I hated it!"

SELF: Are you in the best shape of your life?
Hilary Duff: My sister and I last year really started to motivate each other to eat better and work out together and lose weight. We used to be so bad. Jack in the Box was my weakness, burgers and pizza and dessert all the time. I can’t even believe I used to eat as badly as I did. French fries were an obsession also, and I completely stopped eating them a year ago. It’s funny that when you don’t let yourself have something for a while you don’t miss it as much.
How often do you do pilates?
I try to do pilates three times a week. It’s hard, though, because now I’ve told all my friends about my pilates instructor and my little secret place and now I can’t even get my own appointment! I’ll also go to the gym with my sister and friend and do cardio.
Like what?
I run on the treadmill. I start off in a power walk on a high incline to warm up so I won’t get cramps and stuff, and then I’ll lower it. I can’t jog on an incline. I’d be so tired! I also do the elliptical. I get really out of breath and get a headache on the treadmill, so the elliptical is better. Also, it works your arms.
Plus, there’s no danger of falling off!
You know what’s funny? I was at the gym yesterday with my best girlfriend and it was raining hard so our tennis shoes were wet. We were thinking what if we fall off and slip? And this really big guy did it. He fell off his treadmill. I was trying not to laugh but it was so funny. And it made this huge thud noise. We were like, thank God that wasn’t us!
You credit pilates with your weight loss.
With everything! Seriously, my body changed in three weeks. I’ve always been really muscular; that’s why pilates is good for me. I have broad shoulders and if I do weights or something I’ll bulk up and feel manly, but pilates lengthens me out. Also you feel really powerful.
Do you have an eating philosophy?
Eating should be fun. I did Atkins for three days and I was in the worst mood and so tired. I’m from Texas, so I’m a big meat eater, but I was like oh, no more! I believe in proportion. If I eat bread when they bring bread to the table, I won’t eat pasta or potatoes. Or I’ll try to not have the bread because I know I want dessert. A little bit of this, a little bit of that.
How would you eat differently if you had more time?
Probably I’d be able to have a more balanced diet. Because sometimes, I’ll eat something in the morning but then I could spend all day driving around going to meetings, doing this, doing that. I don’t have time to eat so I’ll be so starving for dinner that I’ll eat anything in sight. That’s when you get in trouble, I think. If you try to eat more throughout the day, then you’re more controlled. It helps a lot if I’m around my mom. She’s a diabetic, so she has to eat five times a day or else her blood sugar goes all crazy. That’s a good way to go about things.
You’re launching a new clothing line. You don’t show a lot of skin. Why don’t you have to expose everything to be sexy or look good?
When I feel sexy, I don’t always have fewer clothes on. My clothing line is for girls who are 7 to 14, so we’d never do [overtly sexy clothes] anyway, but I have a line coming out for girls who are 15 to 20 and it’ll be stuff I’d wear. I know when I wear something that’s a little more skimpy, there have been cases where I feel insecure about myself. I don’t feel confident. I’d rather wear a pencil skirt, something I’d feel sexy in. I just think that there is so much more about not showing off everything you have that’s sexy, and leaving sex to the imagination and feeling confident.

I never ask celebrities for their autographs. Once you get to know them, asking for an autograph is like asking your sister or friend for one. First, what's the point? Second Hello! Awkward! I recently made my first exception to my no-autograph rule for SELF's July cover girl, Hilary Duff, who is the supreme idol of both my niece and my girlfriend's niece. I grabbed two outtakes from the shoot and asked her to sign both. "How do you spell Annie?" she asked. "Um, A-N-N-I-E." She seemed a little embarrassed to have inquired, but then she told me this story: A young fan had been carrying a picture of Duff all day, and when she finally got the star's attention, Duff obliged and wrote "Mary, Best wishes, Hilary Duff." The girl looked at the photo and said, "It's M-E-R-R-Y." Duff told me that she felt terrible about "ruining" the picture, but then added defensively, "But how the hell was I supposed to know? Now I'm like, 'Oh, Pam? How do you spell that?'" That was the moment I became a Hilary Duff fan. (Oh, and she signed the photos for the girls, who were absolutely thrilled.) —Erin Bried "Always ask the spelling" isn't the only lesson Duff has learned on her way to superstardom. Normandie Avenue is a nurturing community school that is dedicated to helping children achieve, believe, and succeed in a global society fueled by social and academic excellence.

Where do I start? I have been having fun, this weekend we were in Sacramento for a radio show with 107.9 KDND. We had a ball. It was out doors, I got to chill out in good weather. I performed 12 songs with my band. There were other artists there like Gym Class Heroes, Katherine McPhee and The Click 5 and Ne-YO. We signed autographs and the fans were crazy hyped!! I have to say that I am having so much fun with my new band. Everyone is so cool and like laid back. We all just gel together. After the show, we went to a nice sushi place and laughed and talked and the hung out a little. I like Sacramento, it is a nice breath of fresh air.My weekend was good, I am back in LA and I only have rehearsal today for like 5 hours. We are getting ready for the summer tour! It’s new, exciting and different! Fatima, my choreographer has been challenging me and pushing me to places where I have never gone. I am learning and evolving and it feels good.
I gotta go to rehearsals, I’ll talk to you guys soon.

The singer believes Britney’s teenage career was the key factor in her downfall, with the pressure put on her too much to handle.
"I feel for her," she said. "I’ve met her a few times and she’s very sweet, hard-working and talented. Being Britney Spears must be difficult. She’s been told what to do since she was young. She’s not a bad mum - she’s a first-time mum, and because she’s famous, she’s expected never to make mistakes. The pressure she’s under would get to anyone. People need to leave her alone."
The 19-year-old admitted she is wary of following a similar path, but claimed she will keep her own eyes open, having seen Spears’ example: "I’m not going to stop doing what I love because I’m afraid of breaking down. But I’ve seen how easily it happens. My sister, Haylie, and I used to live in this apartment complex with lots of young Hollywood stars. I watched lots of famous people earning too much and getting into trouble. I saw people lose everything. Thankfully, I haven’t fallen into that trap."

The prospect of meeting up with superstar Hilary Duff at 9am on a Sunday morning was more than slightly daunting. I prepared myself to feel decidedly drab in comparison to Ms Duff, I mean she’s a Hollywood A-lister after all! Add to that the fact that on arrival, I encounter no less than five of her ‘people’ before I’m allowed to get near her. It’s obviously true what they say about stars and their entourages. So, I’m slightly nervous that Hilary will turn all J-Lo on us and demand we re-paint her room in white and order some Evian for her to bathe in.
We’re holed-up in London’s swanky Soho Hotel and as we settle down on a huge sofa and start chatting, I’m pleasantly surprised by how nice and, well, normal Hilary is. Between gossip she sips on mineral water and when we stop for lunch, she tucks into a big sarnie - girl after out own hearts. Then we swap shopping and fashion tips. Company art director Adele even asks where she got her trainers and heads straight to the Nike store for her own pair as soon as we wrap. FYI Hilary loves Portobello market, the Apple store, some of Bond Street’s hottest designers and get this - she can’t wait to go to Topshop! See, even Hollywood starlets have their heads turned by a pair of skinny jeans and pumps from our fave shopping haven.
Nosing around Hilary’s hotel room, she’s clearly a girlie girl. Rails and rails of clothes and shoes line one wall, while a batch of scented candles make the whole place smell altogether sweeter. That’s until she cranks up her iPod dock and the sound of a who’s who of American rockers blasts out (guess that makes her girlie-cool!). What’s surprising about Hilary’s level of superstardom is that as she poses for Company’s cover, she isn’t all model-like poise, she even seems a little shy sometimes. But I guess that’s what makes her so approachable and leaves us Company girls leaving the shoot claiming she’s our new best friend. Honest she is!

Whatever became of the princess of perk who lit up the hit TV series Lizzie McGuire, sold three platinum pop CDs, and made big-screen bonbons like A Cinderella Story and The Perfect Man? Oh, right, that was so yesterday.
It isn’t like anybody listening to Duff’s new CD is going to say that the 19-year-old has suddenly veered down the boulevard of broken dreams into the brand of brutally confessional music sung by Joni Mitchell, Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morissette or even Avril Lavigne. But Duff’s change in tone is pronounced enough to make you think that, even as we’re being invited to righteously shake our booties, we’re also getting a bulletin from the singer-songwriter that there are perils to being young, pretty, famous, successful on several fronts and rich.
“My heart does go out to Britney–she has an awful lot to deal with. I remember when all that stuff came out about her not strapping her baby in the car seat right. I was just like, ‘Leave her alone.’ My mom said to me, ‘Do you know how many times I dropped you on your head or let you fall off something accidentally?’ It just happens.”
After all not oonly the interview, these are the beautiful Pictures shot for the show...At the Brentwood mansion where she’s doing a glam photo shoot, Duff works for the camera with professionalism and good humor, dutifully striking a series of poses and moods in different outfits, letting the small army of makeup artists, stylists, lighting experts and personal handlers carry out their missions on and about her person. The difference in Duff is not just the music. There’s her new look. She’s very slim and very brunette these days, and the angles and planes of her face have taken on definition. She’s begun to look more womanly, and at the same time more waif-ish and vulnerable.
The surface change has been accompanied by certain seismic shifts in the life of the Houston-born Duff. Last year she ended a several-year relationship with Good Charlotte singer Joel Madden, who quickly moved on to squire Nicole Richie around quite prominently. Duff ’s only public romance before Madden had had its own hurtful aspect and unhappy ending. Teen pop idol Aaron Carter, who reportedly dumped Lindsay Lohan for Duff, publicly apologized, after his year-plus relationship with Duff had been over for some time, for cheating on Duff with one of her close friends.
There has been professional as well as personal disappointment. After initially enjoying success with films like Cheaper By the Dozen and A Cinderella Story, Duff had much less success with Raise Your Voice, The Perfect Man and Material Girls, which all bombed with both audiences and critics.
Overall, though, most of the changes Hilary Duff has been going through are steps up. Way up, in fact. Duff was the youngest person to make Rolling Stone’s 2006 list of top moneymakers, with a reported take of $17.1 million. With her new CD, Dignity, already atop the charts, she will kick off a summer concert tour of the U.S., Canada and Europe. She also has two movies due out this year, one of them an unexpected and promising project–a satire of American imperialism and commercialism co-written and directed by John Cusack. She stars with Cusack, Sir Ben Kingsley and Marisa Tomei.
Even after the tiring hours of her photo session, Duff is frien-
dly and willing to take on the rigors of a lengthy interview. When I begin by telling her, “I detect more than a little discontent and anxiety in your new CD,” her face lights up as if she’s getting a second wind. “I’m really glad you noticed that,” she says, smiling, sitting very still, looking pretty and poised, and searching my eyes for any telltale signs of a journalist’s mockery or manipulation. She won’t find any.“That’s kind of the feel of this record for me,” she continues. “This is the first time I wrote a record by myself. I mean, I had help from one other person, but every song has a really kind of deep meaning to me. It’s not message music, but it’s personal. I didn’t do them with a serious, dramatic track, but they still mean a lot to me.”
Duff’s 2003 smash Metamorphosis had hit singles like “So Yesterday” and “Come Clean” that helped spark an entirely sold-out concert tour. Writing and recording in a more perso-nal vein than her earlier albums was a gamble. “It was scary at first,” she says, with a catch in her voice that suggests she isn’t kidding. “I’ve been in the business most of my life. You get to a point where you learn to only show people what you want them to talk about or see. If there’s something going on in your family that you don’t want the whole world to know about, you hide it and lie about it. The same if you’re seeing someone. It had gotten so that I would really think about everything that came out of my mouth, knowing that it could get twisted into this, that or whatever. You really close yourself up, and when you talk or do an interview, you turn into someone you don’t know. It’s not a bad thing. It’s just that you don’t want people to know everything about you. When I started writing this record, I couldn’t help but write about things that affected me. Some of the songs were so honest that I was like, ‘Do I really want people to know this?’ Finally, I just thought, ‘Who am I kidding? All it’s going to do is make people see that I’m a human.’”
Duff has been in the spotlight since she was 10, and she has an older sister, Haylie, who’s famous, too (for 7th Heaven and Napoleon Dynamite). Unsurprisingly, then, she has the paparazzi on high alert to see whether or not she’ll become another club-hopping, wild-child celebrity train wreck. When I ask her if she feels like she’s living in a fishbowl, she responds, “I don’t know what it’s like not to deal with people watching what I do, but it’s funny that you use the word ‘fishbowl’ because that’s exactly what I say. My sister and I have our own private signal of ‘Here we are again, living in a fishbowl.’” She demonstrates by puffing out her eyes and cheeks like a ticked-off blowfish. “It’s somewhat humorous, but it’s also unnatural and weird.”
Considering how she feels about drawing the wrong kinds of attention to herself, one wonders whether Duff has ever considered dating guys who have a lower public profile than her ex, Madden. “I had such a great relationship for two and a half years,” she says. “When we broke up, it was just kind of time. I’d been in a relationship with him for so long. I’m just too young. I love him. He’s really a great person.” As for watching his very public follow-up romance with Nicole Richie, she says quietly, “We were not a couple who would go out and be seen together. On the red carpet, I’d go in first and he’d go in second. If we were at my house and went out for a walk to Coffee Bean and photographers were there, he would walk across the street so we wouldn’t be in the same shot. But because we wouldn’t give people anything, they started saying so many things that were untrue or just nasty. You’re in a lose-lose situation. But it would have been cheesy to be a couple that just loves to go out and get photographed. That was not our thing. So you do wonder why they do it now when they were so against it before? You’re like, wait–were you really that person who didn’t like that public lifestyle or was I just a fool? But I broke up with Joel and when I decided that breaking up was the right decision, I had to think through all the things I was going to have to deal with. One of them was seeing him with someone else. It’s definitely difficult to see him move on so quickly.”
Since Duff is as much a part of Young Hollywood as Britney, Lindsay, Paris and others who’ve publicly gone off the rails and been hounded by the press while they were at it, I ask her if she feels empathy for them. She ponders this a while, then finally says, “Some people I feel more sorry for than others. For some reason–and I don’t know if it’s just because I don’t want to be like that–I’ve stayed out of all that stuff, far away from it. I don’t want to be that person who shows up in those types of magazines and newspapers all the time, and some of that is avoidable. My heart does go out to Britney–she has an awful lot to deal with. What a Week! [ 5/31/2007 ]

It’s been a long time. I have been busy and trying to maintain this crazy schedule. Hope you checked out Stranger. It premiered yesterday on Yahoo! and is coming on TRL. Plz, help retire it like With Love. I did a photo shoot for a UK fashion magazine at this beautiful house in the Hollywood Hills; it had a huge artist’s quarters and a beautiful garden. The house had one of the best views of Hollywood that I have ever seen. They say the guy who directed Patriot Games owns it.
Anyhoo, I am off on VACATION WITH MY BIG SIS HAYLIE!!! We are flying to NY because one of the executive producers of Lizzie McGuire named Susan Jansen is getting married, we are going to the wedding and then we will stay a few days and relax and enjoy life. I promise that I will send pics from our trip.
Gotta go, I’ll talk to you soon. Oh yeah, I saw a preview of War Inc., the movie we filmed in Bulgaria, and it was awesome! I really enjoyed it, can’t wait until it comes out in the film festivals.
