Canoe Jam Music, Concert Review

Scotiabank Place, Ottawa - Sept. 5, 2007

By -- Sun Media
Ottawa, and the rest of the world for that matter, just can't get enough of that teen queen Hilary Duff.

The 19-year-old entertainer has released four albums over the past four years, including her latest collection of derivative dance numbers and ballads called Dignity. As if that wasn't enough, she's also done a couple of movies, designed her own line of tween wear and launched her own fragrance, "Stuff."

Even with all that on her plate, Duff made time to walk through something that looked like a concert at Scotiabank Place last night.

Talking about dignity, there wasn't much of it in this brazen parade of marketing-based entertainment. And much like her last visit in 2006, Duff worked the screaming bubblegummers and their parents over ruthlessly with a tightly choreographed but hopelessly robotic show.

It opened with a truly deafening wail from 4,200 hormonally discharging teenaged girls as Duff dove into Playing With Fire, Danger and that theme song for dozens of acne cream ads, Come Clean.

And when she leaned back, closed her eyes and belted that one out, it actually looked like she was singing.

Hilary Duff not getting The Best of Reviews

Poor Duffster, her man leaves her and within months impregnates another woman and now she is not getting the best of reviews on her music.

Hilary Duff has begun her tour and let’s just say she isn’t getting much love from the critics.

There was an article about her tour basically saying that she really doesn’t have a good voice. They did however say that her music is good club music because of the high tunes and her squeaky voice. They did mention that she should not sing any ballads.

I don’t think Hilary Duff thinks she has an amazing voice.
She knows she is an entertainer more than a singer. It would be silly if she thought she had Christina Aguilera’s or Whitney Houston’s voice. The girl is just having fun with her music.

Lifehouse will not be performing the rest of thier scheduled dates with Hilary Duff. Sorry to all for the inconvenience. Their tour with the Goo Goo Dolls will resume in Chicago on the 23rd.

No word if this is because Hilary Duff fans don’t like Lifehouse or if it is because Lifehouse fans were upset about the pairing.

Hilary Duff dating Mike Comrie Again in Vancouver

Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie cannot escape any more from the buzzes. They have been dating and why Hilary has to ignore that I do not know. He looks good and seems to have a good moral character too.

She has been ignoring time to time. Recently she had answered about Mike as...

"I'm in Edmonton, he's from Edmonton," she said, squirming in her chair. "Some of the guys (at the shelter) asked me about him, about hockey."

Hilary Duff's Concert in Everett, review and videos of the Performance

Hilary Duff gave another blazing performance in Everett.

See the videos ...

But the show was packed only with the 25% of the total capacity, and the fans were seemed to be trying to make it out a LARGE ONE.

Duff opened with crowd favorites such as "Coming Clean," "Beat of My Heart" and "Our Lips are Sealed," belting out the catchy hooks in her light, airy voice, which still has a childlike quality.

The music had such a prepackaged sound that it was hard to tell if the musicians were actually playing. The young band members banged away at drums, strummed the guitars and fingered the piano in a manner akin to a Disney Channel music video.
There was no edge, or spontaneity to the sound, just a sing-song rhythm repackaged and rehashed to accompany Duff's multiple outfits and play-acting choreography.

"So Yesterday," was a little better. The band infused it with a reggae beat, and the Bob Marley hook, "Everything's gonna be all right" from "No Woman, No Cry," which made the song less predictable.

Her rendition of "Love is a Battlefield" was equally surprising, replacing Pat Benatar's angry edge with a poplike ode to girl power.

New songs from her "Dignity" album ("With Love," "I Wish" and "Dignity") amped up the pop appeal with edgy electronic beats — not as robotic as the Bravery or as club-friendly as Justin Timberlake, but entertaining enough.

She closed with the best song on her "Dignity" album, "Stranger," which has a seductive Arabic flute and pulsating electronic beats similar to Britney Spears' "I'm a Slave for You." Although the music lacked substance, one thing is clear — the girl has got style and a powerhouse marketing machine. Her fans left decked out in Duff hoodies, and holding glow pens and pamphlets covered with glamour photos of the pop-star-in-the-making.

The opening act, Lifehouse, was more musically mature — too bad the crowd didn't know who they were. The band rocked out with lead singer Jason Wade's trademark raspy, sultry voice soaring over escalating guitar riffs in "Hanging by a Moment" and over the slow melodic "You and Me."

You can meet Hilary Duff

Hilary Duff will rendezvous with fans before her Aug. 25 concert at the Louisville Palace.

But she's asking for something in return: If you want to meet 'n' greet the 19-year-old singer, you'll need to help collect 1,000 cans for U.S.A. Harvest. The Louisville-based charity donates food to the hungry.

Thus far Duff's fans have helped her raise more than 4 million pounds of food.

Who: Hilary Duff
Where: Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre
When: Saturday night
Rating: 3 out of 5

There are many ways to describe Hilary Duff. She's nice: encouraging each of her fans last night at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre to bring canned goods for charity. Her last two Canadian tours have collected more than 57,000 kilograms of food for the hungry. She even tried on a hairnet last week in Edmonton to serve meals to the homeless.

She's sweet -- as hockey star boyfriend Mike Comrie would likely agree (no sighting of him last night). As she told Seventeen magazine last fall, there's nothing she wants more than "the cookie-cutter American Dream. To get married, have kids and have a house with a picket fence." She's polite: thanking the crowd for picking up those $45 and up T-shirts sold at the doors.

She doesn't party, she doesn't drive drunk on the wrong side of a freeway, she doesn't flash paparazzi.

She is also the idol of millions of little girls who've wanted her to be their big sister since catching their first episode of Lizzie Maguire on the Disney Channel.

All these things make the thought of a Hilary Duff show mildly heartwarming. Because it's stating the obvious to mention this show was for the girls. For hundreds of them, dressed up in their own pop-star finery, this was a rite of passage.

Before things started, they were squealing, some bouncing over their seats so much their watchful moms had to anchor them back to their seats. But when Duff appeared, there was one more way to describe her, and considering her effect on the fans it's a little heartbreaking to admit it: She's totally bland.

The electroclash-y Play With Fire was how she made her entrance, strutting down a staircase, flanked by four dancers in a silver short-short jumpsuit, drenched in ghetto-fab jewelry. The outfit sparkled more than poor Duff, though. The number was for dancing, but all she could muster was a few little struts around the stage, occasionally shaking a hip should she feel steady enough on those strappy stilettos. The pop princesses in the stands would probably have more pizazz in their mommies' heels.

The flash carried things along as hit bled into hit. Little fists were pumping along to Come Clean and Getaway while Duff ducked backstage for possibly the most anemic costume change in pop concert history: switching stiletto sandals for black patent pumps. The set stuck closely to Duff's latest record, Dignity, a dancefloor-engineered collection with a debt to pay to the godmothers of the arena pop show -- Madonna, Kylie Minogue -- though amusingly she has been paying closer attention to the work of Pat Benatar; a to-the-note cover of Love Is a Battlefield was probably Duff's most dedicated dance performance, recreating the classic video's shimmying dance-off. The few older, frothier E-Z rock hits included in the 90-minute set got slight retoolings to match the show's dance-y vibe.

So Yesterday turned reggae, complete with a shout-out to Bob Marley. She could have done the song to a polka beat, for all the kids cared, though.

What they got out of the show, never mind how good it was, were some skills they'll carry with them for years. They learned that it's OK to dance like a maniac to your favourite song, to raise a lighter -- ok, maybe a $10 glowstick -- when things shifted into power-ballad mode and to scream like mad when they hear the words, "Good night, Victoria!"

Hilary Duff's Phone interview with Victoria Times @ Canada.com

"As much as I complain about it, because you’re doing the same thing every day, I love it,"
the singer-actress says of the tour, which stops tomorrow in Vancouver at Pacific Coliseum and Saturday in Victoria at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.

"There’s nothing you can compare to this. It’s excitement every single night, and a challenge to get better and do something new and inspire people."…
the peppy performer — who entered the North American spotlight in 2001 as the titular character in Disney’s Lizzie McGuire franchise — appears at ease with the pace.

"I have learned to deal with it since my TV show. That’s my life and this is how it’s going to be for me. When I was younger it was harder to deal with."

Duff technically isn’t "old," which she jokingly calls herself, but she is something of a veteran; she has been in the public eye since she was 10… In an effort to grow with her fans, when it came time to record Dignity she broke free from the disposable teen-pop of her past. It was a potentially dangerous creative leap, she says, but one that even her co-star agreed she should run with.

"I was telling John (Cusack) that I was nervous," she says. "And he said, ‘If this record sells 10,000 copies or three million copies is it going to make a difference? Would you change it?’ And I said no. I was just happy to have been able to have the experience, because it totally changed me."…

For once, Duff says, people outside of her core audience had good things to say.
"It was such a relief. For the first time, I was so happy and so relieved. You set yourself up for failure because I’m Top 40 and sing pop music and it’s not cool. But there’s a market for everything. Just because (a magazine) has a certain taste doesn’t mean they have everyone’s taste."…

"I’m not the celebrity who likes to be photographed. But I have gotten more at peace with it."…

"Paparazzi know where my home is and they wait outside on the weekends. But I definitely am not the celebrity that does tonnes of controversial things, so I don’t get it as bad as other people, I don’t think. When you’re walking into a club — yeah, they are going to be there. But if you go to a restaurant that’s low-key, they are probably not going to be there. Lots of celebrities complain about it, but they love it."

Duff says she is like any normal 19-year-old (though we don’t know many whose personal wealth was estimated at $15 million in 2005). If she doesn’t feel like going out, and getting dressed up in order to do so, she stays out of the public eye.

"I work so hard, so when I have time off, the last thing I want to do is feel like I have to look a certain way or watch what I do."

Hilary Duff encouraging food donations to The Salvation Army

Hilary Duff encouraging food donations to The Salvation Army

VANCOUVER, Aug. 3 /CNW/ - Recording artist Hilary Duff is asking fans to bring canned goods to her concert in support of The Salvation Army and Canadian Harvest. Duff's Dignity Tour lands at Vancouver's Pacific Coliseum on Friday, August 3 and at the Save-On Foods Centre in Victoria on Saturday, August 4. Her last two Canadian tours have raised more than 125,000 pounds of
food.

"Working with Canadian Harvest is a way for me to give something back to the community," said Duff. "The last two times I toured Canada, my fans did an amazing job of providing canned goods and I'm certain this time they can do even better!"
The partnership between Duff, The Salvation Army and Canadian Harvest launched this summer in Winnipeg on July 28, with the kick-off of Duff's six-week North American tour. Food donations will be collected at 12 shows across Canada. Food will be collected at concert gates by Salvation Army volunteers and will be distributed in the communities where it was collected. Duff is encouraging fans to bring as much as they can carry.

Canadian Harvest and its American counterpart USA Harvest began in 1989. Since then, the organization has collected more than 11.6 billion pounds of food for missions, soup kitchens and food banks across North America. The Salvation Army will assist in distributing collected food to those who need it.

The Salvation Army is the largest non-governmental provider of social services in British Columbia. For more information on The Salvation Army, visit www.SalvationArmy.ca.

24 Seconds Hilary Duff Interview by 24 Hours

24 seconds with Hilary Duff
By BUZZ BISHOP

Courtesy:24 hours

She has sold more than 13 million CDs, made movies, and created a perfume and clothing line. Tonight she brings her tour to the Pacific Coliseum. Buzz Bishop spent 24 seconds with Hilary Duff on the phone from Edmonton.

24hrs: What's it like being young in Hollywood? Are there people dragging you into trouble, or do you have to go and find it?

Hilary: It's everywhere, it's really easy to find it. I love L.A. I live there, it's my home, but it's really easy to lose yourself in that town. You have to really know what you believe in and stick with it and have good friends.

24hrs: So being focused on yourself and what you want to put out there has kept your head above it?

Hilary: That and my family. I don't like to live very publicly, like so many people do. I feel like I've worked so much as it is, I want privacy.
24hrs: For most of us, running into an ex at the mall would be painful. How is it for you to see your ex (Joel Madden with new girlfriend Nicole Richie) paraded across the tvs and tabloids this week?
Hilary: It's not really a problem for me to deal with it. I want them to be happy. Joel and I ended on very good terms and we ended knowing that it was the right thing to do and it made us both happy. So it's not hard for me to see it.
24hrs: You still balance music and movies very well. You've got three more movie projects coming down the line, including War Inc (with Ben Kingsley and John Cusack) set to debut at the Toronto Film Festival. You've said this role is controversial. What's it all about?
Hilary: It's a dark comedy. It's about war and how Americans go into a place and blow it up and take it over and try to act like heroes. It's pretty messed up. I play this over-sexed pop star that has a big spark, but not much to back it up. One thing that was so much fun about doing this movie, is that it's nothing like who I am. It's nothing like my music, I look totally different in it. It's an artsy independent movie and getting to work with all those people was a treat.
24hrs: When did you become a hockey fan?
Hilary: I don't know anything about hockey.
24hrs: Well, with Mike Comrie (NY Islanders) on your arm in some photos, you're going to have to learn something.
Hilary: Do you want to give me a crash course?
24hrs: Get down to Vancouver and get a good Canucks jersey on your back!
Hilary: (laughs) Okay.

Hilary Duff's Answer to the question about Mike Comrie and about Hope Mission

Hilary Duff helps serve lunch at the Hope Mission at the Herb Jamieson Centre.

EDMONTON -Pop singer Hilary Duff dished up chicken stew for hundreds of homeless men at the Herb Jamieson Centre today as part of her personal campaign to raise awareness about poverty and hunger.

The teen celebrity served the hot lunch and dessert for an hour at the downtown emergency shelter, and also visited Hope Mission's nearby headquarters.

"The Hope Mission was a priority and we wanted to lend a hand," she said after completing her kitchen shift. "It's so rewarding for me. I love to get down and dirty and help out."

Duff, who performs at Rexall Place tonight, kicked off the Canadian leg of her North American Dignity tour in Winnipeg Saturday.

She is soliciting non-perishable food donations from Edmonton concert-goers, which will be distributed in the city through food-raising charity Alberta Harvest.

The singer often collaborates with lead organization Canadian Harvest, and has raised more than 125,000 pounds of food on her past two Canadian tours. Founder Stan Curtis said each concert can bring in as many as 3,000 cans of food, enough for 6,000 meals.

Hope Mission spokeswoman Janelle Aker said Duff's efforts will help raise awareness with a younger demographic that might not be aware of the emergency shelter. Many of Duff's fans are children.

"She stayed for the whole lunch," Aker said. "Until the last man received his food."

Duff's appearance also brought smiles to the faces of men who live on the streets of Edmonton, Aker said. Many were surprised to see Duff handing them their meal.

"It's nice when someone who makes a lot of money will look you in the eye and treat you like a real person," Aker said.

Hunger and homelessness are intertwined and deceptively simple problems to solve, Duff said, and compassion is key.

"A big misconception of charity work and celebrities is that it takes a lot of money," she said. "It doesn't take a lot of money. Your time is the best thing you can give."

At the mention of star chatter that Duff is dating former Oiler Mike Comrie, the 19-year-old singer's face brightened with a girlish grin, calling it a funny coincidence to be performing in Comrie's hometown.

"I'm in Edmonton, he's from Edmonton," she said, squirming in her chair. "Some of the guys (at the shelter) asked me about him, about hockey."
